AMVETS SELECTS NINETY STUDENTS TO ATTEND NATIONAL SUMMIT
Students from across the country to gather at Freedoms Foundation,
Valley Forge, Pa.
WASHINGTON, Oct. 9, 2008—AMVETS has announced this year’s participants in the AMVETS Spirit of America Youth Leadership Conference at Freedoms Foundation in Valley Forge, Pa., Nov. 6-9, 2008. AMVETS, one of the nation’s leading veteran’s service organizations, has selected ninety high school students from across the country to learn about American history first hand during the weekend conference.

Each student was selected to attend based on the AMVETS annual Americanism Essay Contest, and by displaying excellence in leadership and academic ability. During the four-day program, the students will participate in a variety of workshops; hear from experts in business, government, and academia; and tour historic Philadelphia.

“Each of these students has demonstrated a sense of patriotism and a sense of community worthy of our recognition,” said AMVETS National Program Director Beryl Love, who oversees the Americanism program and the conference. “We hope each of these young men and women will be able to take part in this conference, learning hands-on about the birth of our nation and what it means to be an American.”

Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge was established in 1949 to honor patriotism and good citizenship. For nearly 50 years, the foundation has been dedicated to instilling the patriotic spirit in young Americans, teachers and communities and to honoring those individuals and organizations that exemplify this spirit.

Through this program students will learn the ideals and principles upon which the United States was founded, and learn that the responsibilities citizens hold and the freedoms they enjoy are twin pillars.

AMVETS partnered with the foundation in 1988 and has over the years introduced thousands of young people to this country’s historic beginnings.

Students selected to participate in the program should contact Tiffany Hilton at AMVETS National Headquarters as soon as possible to confirm their place in the conference at (301) 683-4031, or thilton@amvets.org.
