Illinois AMVETS Donate “Hoodies” to Wounded Warriors

Walter Reed volunteer and Kohl’s department store help keep troops warm

WASHINGTON, April 22, 2008—Back in February, AMVETS Post 8 from Knox County, Ill., was looking for a way to help wounded warriors recovering at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. The post enlisted the help of Retired Air Force Colonel, Dr. Christina Lafferty, a volunteer at Walter Reed.

Lafferty told AMVETS that soldiers at the hospital were in dire need of hooded sweatshirts. Out of this simple request, Post 8’s “Operation Hoodie” was born. Post 8 donated $500 to Lafferty, who worked with her local Kohl’s retailer to purchase more than 30 sweatshirts at a reduced price for troops recovering at Walter Reed. Members of Post 8 also signed a framed letter to the wounded warriors at Walter Reed, thanking them for their service and wishing them the best in their recovery.
