UNIVERSITY OF PHOENIX AND AMVETS INCREASE SCHOLARSHIP COMMITMENT FOR 2010

AMVETS now accepting applications for this year’s awards

WASHINGTON, May 18, 2010, 2010—For 2010, University of Phoenix has boosted its commitment to veterans by offering $7,000 per award for the University of Phoenix AMVETS Scholarship Program. This Veterans Day, AMVETS and University of Phoenix will once again award 50 of the scholarships to veterans, service members and eligible family members to pursue a degree through the University of Phoenix.

AMVETS is now accepting applications for the 2010 University of Phoenix AMVETS scholarships. Applications and additional information are available on the AMVETS National Web site, www.amvets.org.

“We’re excited that University of Phoenix has once again raised the bar of support to our nation’s heroes and their loved ones,” said AMVETS National Commander Duane J. Miskulin. “We know that veterans and members of the military around the globe will once again take advantage of this unique program on the path to fulfilling their educational goals.”

AMVETS partnered with University of Phoenix in 2007, offering 25 scholarships to eligible veterans and family members. Since then, University of Phoenix has doubled its commitment, offering 50 scholarships in an effort to help more veterans and families earn a college degree. This year, University of Phoenix bumped up the value of each award from $4,000 to $7,000 each.

“University of Phoenix has been a long-time supporter of the military by helping active members, veterans, and their families realize their educational aspirations,” said Garland Williams, Associate Regional Vice President for the University of Phoenix Military Division. “Partnering with a dedicated organization like AMVETS to deliver scholarship opportunities deeper into the military community is yet another way to show appreciation for the selfless service and sacrifices of our active duty, veterans, and their devoted families.”

AMVETS has been a vocal advocate for veterans’ education and helped to pass the landmark Post-9/11 G.I. Bill in 2008 and commissioned federal grants for student-veterans’ “centers of excellence” in 2009. While the new G.I. Bill only helps recent veterans fulfill their educational aspirations, the University of Phoenix AMVETS scholarships are available to veterans past and present, and active duty members of the military seeking accredited online degrees.

“The scope of the University of Phoenix scholarship program is what makes it such a remarkable benefit,” said AMVETS National Programs Director Beryl Love. “While Congress has committed to serving today’s veterans, AMVETS and the University of Phoenix are ensuring that veterans of all generations and their loved ones have access to a quality education.”

The University of Phoenix offers both online classes and traditional classroom programs, offering the kind of flexibility that members of the military and veterans need to balance obligations such as a family life or continued military service. AMVETS recognized this unique opportunity and is proud to continue its partnership with the University of Phoenix.

Applications for the University of Phoenix AMVETS scholarships will be accepted from now until August 11, 2010. Awards winners will be notified by Veterans Day, Nov. 11, 2010.
